History and lore
In history and lore: Kunz records that jade was once called the 'stone of the flank' for use against diseases of the kidneys, and that a Chinese encyclopedia presented to the Ming emperor Wan Lih in 1596 described a 'divine liquor of jade,' boiled with rice and dew-water, that was said to purify the blood and calm the mind. Berthold Laufer wrote that in the days of the Chou dynasty jade was taken internally as food, and that the emperor ate it after fasting and purifying himself before communicating with the spirits. This was a historical practice only; jade should never be ingested in any form.
