History and lore
In history and lore: When the Spaniards brought jade home from the Americas, they called it 'piedra de hijada,' the 'stone of the flank,' because native peoples were said to have used it for diseases of the kidneys, and the name nephrite grew from the same idea. Kunz noted that the sailors may have invented the story to raise the value of their jade, yet the belief spread so far that a Scottish gentleman was said to have worn a jade charm tied over his loins against kidney trouble. To the Maori, as Horatio Robley recorded in 1915, the word pounamu (New Zealand nephrite) stood for everything precious, and tatau pounamu, the 'greenstone door', was their figure of speech for the making of peace between tribes.
