History and lore
In history and lore: In Burma, as Kunz reported in 1913 from the Burmese scholar Taw Sein Ko, a ruby was believed to confer invulnerability only when inserted into its owner's flesh, and those who bore one so believed no spear, sword or gun could wound them. James Emerson Tennent recorded in his Ceylon (1860) that the Chinese pilgrim Hiouen Thsang saw, in the seventh century, a ruby raised on a spire above a temple at Anuradhapura, its brilliance said to light the whole sky.
