Fun facts
The Aztec supreme god Tezcatlipoca, whose name means 'Smoking Mirror', was depicted with a polished black obsidian mirror in place of his right foot, through which he could reportedly see all things past, present, and future. When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century, they brought obsidian mirrors back to Europe, where John Dee, court astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, used one to conduct elaborate scrying sessions he believed connected him to angelic beings, producing the system of Enochian magic that still influences Western occultism today. That specific mirror, believed to be of Aztec origin, now sits in the British Museum.
