History and lore
In history and lore: In ancient Egypt, a medical papyrus of about the fifteenth century B.C. directed that beads of lapis lazuli, malachite and probably red jasper be strung on a cord and hung around a sick child's neck while a charm was recited. Kunz also records an old belief that lapis lazuli, 'a blue stone with little golden spots,' was a cure for melancholy and for a recurring fever. The Sumerians, as the Egyptologist Budge reported, believed that the wearer of a lapis lazuli amulet carried with him the veritable presence of a god.
