History and lore
In history and lore: Kunz records that red stones such as garnets, whose color suggested blood, were once believed to confer invulnerability from wounds. In the sixteenth century, garnets joined sapphires, emeralds and rubies in the tonics apothecaries prescribed to guard the heart against poison and the plague. Sanskrit gem texts translated by Tagore in 1879 held that a garnet of the right color, strung on a thread, was 'sound and auspicious' and heralded good fortune.
