Fun facts

Crocoite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1766, and scientists studying it made one of the more surprising discoveries in chemistry: it led directly to the identification of chromium as a new element in 1797. The finest specimens in the world come from a handful of mines in the remote Dundas mineral field of Tasmania, Australia, where prospectors chasing silver-lead strikes in the 1890s uncovered gossans glowing with orange-red crystals. Tasmania declared crocoite its official State Mineral in 2000, and although a few rare crystals have been faceted for collectors, it is too soft and brittle to wear as jewelry, making every specimen a display-only object that exists purely because it's beautiful.
