Summary

Honey Calcite is the warm amber to golden variety of calcite, the calcium carbonate mineral that defines hardness 3 on the Mohs scale; its golden color usually comes from traces of iron, and it is often translucent enough to glow when held to the light. Much of what reaches the shop comes from Mexico, cut as spheres, palm stones and towers. In crystal tradition it is associated with the Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras and is a favorite for confidence, motivation and steady effort, a warm, sunny stone for seeing a task through.

Fun facts

The name calcite comes through the German Calcit from the Latin calx, meaning lime. A clear form of calcite called Iceland spar shows double refraction, so objects seen through it appear doubled.

Care and cleansing

Calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and scratches easily, so store it apart from harder stones. It reacts with acids, so keep it away from vinegar, lemon and acidic cleaners. A quick rinse is fine but do not soak it; dry it right away.
