History and lore

In history and lore: In the Middle Ages the opal was often called the 'eyestone,' and Albertus Magnus recorded the virtues then ascribed to it for diseases of the eye. Medieval writers also credited it with the power to make its wearer invisible, earning it the nickname 'patron of thieves.' Budge recorded that admirers of the opal, seeing the colors of ruby, carbuncle, garnet, emerald and amethyst in its depths, said it held the powers of all those stones.
