History and lore
In history and lore: Old writers on gems credited agates of every kind with steadying their wearers: Camillo Leonardo claimed they gave 'victory and strength', and Cardano wrote that all varieties made those who wore them 'temperate, continent, and cautious.' Writing in 1930 of agates used extensively in the East, Budge recorded that the brown agate was the most popular kind, for it made the warrior victorious. Botswana Agate is a banded agate, so this lore was told of its family as a whole.
About the sources
- Camillo Leonardo, whose Speculum lapidum, a book of stones, was printed in Venice in 1502 (Kunz).
- Girolamo Cardano, author of De subtilitate, who, as Kunz tells it, tested gems by wearing them in turn and noting the good or ill fortune that followed.
- E. A. Wallis Budge, Egyptologist, sometime Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in the British Museum, author of Amulets and Superstitions (Oxford University Press, 1930), which covers Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Islamic and Christian amulets.
