In history and lore: Agates of many kinds were counted among the stones of healing in older times: Kunz records that agate was believed to have a cooling influence upon the body, and that it was also credited with checking hemorrhages, a use he tied to red varieties of the stone. Budge noted that the greater number of Persian and Arab amulets were made of agate and carnelian 'because of the magical power which was believed to exist in these stones'.
