Fun facts
Aquamarine takes its name from the Latin for sea water, and Pliny the Elder wrote in the first century that the most prized beryls were those that imitated the pure green of the sea. Sailors of the ancient world carried it as a charm for safe passage, and in the Middle Ages beryl was held to make its wearer unconquerable and amiable, as the thirteenth century writer Arnoldus Saxo recorded. It is March's birthstone, and the largest cut aquamarine in the world, the Dom Pedro, is a 10,363 carat obelisk from Brazil now in the Smithsonian.
