In history and lore: In 1887 the Sanskrit scholar Monier Monier-Williams described the Bana-linga, a water-polished pebble from the bed of the Narmada river that Hindu householders worshipped at home as the emblem of Shiva. He wrote that a single bilva leaf offered on a true Bana-linga from the Narmada was counted an act of 'enormous merit,' while pebbles from other rivers were held to carry no special presence of the god.
