Shark Teeth

Chakras: Root, Solar Plexus

Zodiac: Capricorn, Scorpio

Elements: Earth, Water, Storm

Summary

Fossil shark teeth are the most common shark fossils of all, because a shark sheds thousands of teeth in a lifetime and tooth enamel outlasts bone. Most of the teeth in our shops come from the phosphate beds of Khouribga in Morocco, where Otodus obliquus, a giant ancestor of the megalodon, hunted warm seas about 50 million years ago. Highly protective in crystal tradition, they help us connect with our more ancient guides, heighten our accomplishments and quality at the workplace, keep us receptive to new ideas and assist with transition, transformation and personal growth.

Fun facts

For centuries before anyone knew what they were, fossil shark teeth were called tongue stones, glossopetrae, and were believed to be the petrified tongues of dragons and snakes. In 1667 the Danish anatomist Nicolas Steno compared them with the teeth of a freshly caught shark and showed what they really were, one of the first steps toward the science of fossils.

Care and cleansing

Fossil teeth are sturdy but the enamel edges chip. Rinse briefly, dry with a soft cloth and store them where they will not rub together. Cleanse with water, smoke, sound or moonlight.
