History and lore

In history and lore: Dendritic agate belongs to the great agate family, and Kunz records that the writer Cardano declared that agates of every variety made their wearers 'temperate, continent, and cautious.' Budge described moss agate, whose markings resembled trees and vegetation, as much prized by the husbandman, who wore one on his right upper arm and put one in the right horn of each of his oxen so that he might have an abundant harvest.

  • E. A. Wallis Budge, Egyptologist, sometime Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in the British Museum, author of Amulets and Superstitions (Oxford University Press, 1930), which covers Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Islamic and Christian amulets.
